Local councils are required by the Countryside Act 1968 (section 27(2)) to place a signpost where a Public Right of Way leaves a "metalled" road. Many councils meet this requirement using aluminium signs with printed vinyl faces in the Transport typeface, standard for road signs. One might argue these lack the rustic charm of the traditional wooden fingerpost, but there are presumably economies of scale to be had, given that councils already procure this sort of sign for road signage in large quantities.
